Example business case

The file is an example of a successful business case for extra staffing for an MRI unit.

Every Trust will have their own template for business cases but if you have to write one you should try to consider:

1. The key drivers for change - if possible link it to national or local targets, NICE guidance, patient experience

2. A demonstration of the case in terms of activity (if appropriate) such as the capacity and demand study used in this case

3. The financial case - you may have to do some guesswork in terms of projecting the impact of the change, this is fine so long as you're clear about what assumptions you're making. You should consider indirect cost implications of the change such as consumables, overheads etc, and any impact on other service areas.

4. An options appraisal. You should always include a "do nothing" option even though it might seem silly. Make sure it is clear which is your preferred option.

5. An analysis of risks and any actions that will need to be taken to mitigate these risks.

6. A really clear executive summary that spells out exactly what you want and why.
